Viruses use VoIP phones to hack Corporate IT

“VoIP security is just beginning to get more attention now that VoIP adoption has reached a tipping point in the last year,” claims David Endler.

His threat is quoted in newswireless.net today.

Endler is chairman of the Voice over IP Security Alliance (VOIPSA). “He was endorsing an announcement by Sipera VIPER Lab, operated by Sipera Systems, of nine threat advisories for WiFi/dual mode telephones from vendors including RIM, HTC, Samsung, Dell and D-Link”, Sipera said: “Dual-mode phones are used to automatically switch between WiFi and cellular networks, thus providing lower costs, improved connectivity and a rich set of converged services utilizing protocols including SIP. However, these protocols also expose enterprise and service provider networks to new VoIP security issues. Left unchecked, these can be exploited by hackers, malicious users and spammers,” the announcement concluded.

Sir Brian had a pair of boots with great big spurs on;.
A fighting pair of which he was particularly fond.
On Tuesday and on Friday,
Just to make the street look tidy,
He’d collect the passing villagers and kick them in the pond.

“I am Sir Brian!” (Sper-lash!)
“I am Sir Brian!” (Sper-losh!)
“I am Sir Brian,
“As bold as a Lion!
“Is anyone else for a wash?”

Sir Brian woke one morning and he couldn’t find his battleaxe.
He walked into the village in his second pair of boots.
He had gone a hundred paces
When the street was full of faces
And the villagers were round him with ironical salutes.

“You are Sir Brian? My, my.
“You are Sir Brian? Dear, dear.
“You are Sir Brian

Sir Brian went a journey and he found a lot of duckweed.
They pulled him out and dried him and they blipped him on the head.
They took him by the breeches
And they hurled him into ditches
And they pushed him under waterfalls and this is what they said:

Sir Brian struggled home again and chopped up his battleaxe.

He is quite a different person

Only one internet; but is “mobile” part of it?

In this week’s net.wars column, Wendy Grossman
remembers the telephone extension wire that cost $250 in today’s money.

And she wonders if the benefits of de-regulation which brought us the $3 (today’s money!)  phone wire, can even bring us a liberalised mobile Internet.

John Connolly told me in an interview in 1993 that they had endless meetings with the telcos trying to get them interested, but those companies just couldn’t see that there was any money in the Internet. Well, now here we are, and the Internet is chewing up the telcos’ business models…[ but]  the current debates are ignoring an important sector of the market: wireless. The mobile market is not now, nor ever has been, neutral. It is less closed in Europe, where you can at least buy a phone and stick any SIM in it; but in the US most phones are hardware-locked to their networks, a situation that could hardly be less consumer-friendly.

Work relationships: it’s really very simple

Noisy furnitureA round table today. Excellent stuff: all about work relationships. And if you assume that all the things they’re assuming are right, then we will all work from home, and have complex, consensual relationships with other workers in distributed enterprises.

Or, alternatively, if you think they’re assuming too much, we’ll all end up adopting survival tactics to ignore our stupid cow-orkers.

Can Pipex really be a goldmine?

According to a snippet at the bottom of the story that “Pipex dangles WiMAX bait”
is this analysis:

“Pipex has been hyping its value for some months now, on the basis that it owns a bunch of radio spectrum of incalculable value. The value, unfortunately, depends on the parallel hype for WiMAX.”

Analyst Guy Kewney writes:

“What it boils down to is that if WiMAX takes off on a major scale, and if Ofcom manages to make a mess of recycling old analogue bandwidth as WiMAX, then (and only then) people could buy alternative WiMAX spectrum by buying Pipex for many times what it would be worth as a run-of-the-mill Internet service provider.

OneTel voicemail: a fed-up sounding blogger

Few things will annoy people more than missing voicemail messages. Of course, they weren’t of any value, but if you can’t retrieve them you tend to assume they really are VITAL! See

You rang? I wouldn’t know – I can’t retrieve my voice-mail. Several people have called this afternoon while I was on the phone doing an interview, and OneTel, which provides my landline into the office, says it is recording your messages. But when it comes to retrieving, OneTel is rather less forthcoming.

which is very nice!

I highlighted the terms and conditions, and asked Performancing to blog it. What do I get?

Nothing!

If I highlight all the legal terms and conditions and copy, I get it:

16. EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS

NOTHING IN THIS AGREEMENT IS INTENDED TO EXCLUDE OR LIMIT ANY CONDITION, WARRANTY, RIGHT OR LIABILITY WHICH MAY NOT BE LAWFULLY EXCLUDED OR LIMITED.  SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF CERTAIN WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OR THE LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE, BREACH OF CONTRACT OR BREACH OF IMPLIED TERMS, OR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  ACCORDINGLY, ONLY THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS IN SECTIONS 14 AND 15 WHICH ARE LAWFUL IN YOUR JURISDICTION WILL APPLY TO YOU AND OUR LIABILITY WILL BE LIMITED TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

You agree that Google may provide you with notices, including those regarding changes to the Terms of Service, by email, regular mail, or postings on Google services.

19. GENERAL INFORMATION

Entire Agreement. The Terms of Service (including any policies, guidelines or amendments that may be presented to your form time to time) constitute the entire agreement between you and Google and govern your use of Google services, superceding any prior agreements between you and Google for the use of Google services. You also may be subject to additional terms and conditions that may apply when you use or purchase certain other Google services, affiliate services, third-party content or third-party software.

Choice of Law and Forum. The Terms of Service and the relationship between you and Google shall be governed by the laws of the State of California without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You and Google agree to submit to the personal and exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located within the county of Santa Clara, California.

Waiver and Severability of Terms. The failure of Google to exercise or enforce any right or provision of the Terms of Service shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. If any provision of the Terms of Service is found by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, the parties nevertheless agree that the court should endeavor to give effect to the parties’ intentions as reflected in the provision, and the other provisions of the Terms of Service remain in full force and effect.

Statute of Limitations. You agree that regardless of any statute or law to the contrary, any claim or cause of action arising out of or related to use of Google services or the Terms of Service must be filed within one (1) year after such claim or cause of action arose or be forever barred.

The section headings in the Terms of Service are for convenience only and have no legal or contractual effect.
